My mouth opened, but nothing came out. Numbness took my mind because I couldn’t think straight. I rocked on the spot, chewing on my cheeks. My heart turned to stone because it refused to beat for a few moments. I kept reading the words over and over, unsure I was seeing correctly. Shifting in my seat, my throat dried, and I felt the blood drain from my face.

Sister Miriam collected the note back, then slid it back into the folder. “Ramblings of a mad person. I wouldn’t pay too much heed to this. Many people who abandon children reach a dark place in their mind; they hallucinate and attack loved ones. Your parents did you a favor by abandoning you because who knew what could have happened if you stayed with them.” Her voice hardened, as did her gaze. She stretched an arm out and held mine. “You are a child of God’s light. Saved and protected.”

I nodded, though all I could do was sit there, dumbfounded. Because as much as Miriam insisted my family was insane, I wasn’t normal either. I manifested fire. Was that what had spooked my mom? Not knowing my parents was one thing, but to read my parents’ words killed me… Declaring me a monster stabbed a knife into my chest and twisted the blade.

Tears pinned my eyes, and I looked down, blinking. Fuck them! They had no right to make me cry, not after all this time. Not after dumping me at three years old on the side of a road as a hopeless child.

But they’d tried to kill me! The note proved it. All this time, I’d hoped that my burns were from someone else or an accident.

“Heartbroken” didn’t come close to describing the agony warping inside me.

“Over five years ago,” Sister Miriam started, “a woman came looking for you. She was too young to be your mom and wanted to know where to find you. But without evidence that proved she was family, we couldn’t share your whereabouts.” She shuffled through the papers and slid out a paper. “She left her phone number if you ever returned.”

I took the paper with shaky hands. Who would look for me? “Do you mind if I call now?” I asked.

“Not at all.” The sister was on her feet, folder tucked under an arm. “That’s all I have to share with you, and I need to return to class. I hope I’ve been able to help you, and it’s wonderful to see you’re doing well for yourself.”

“Yes, more than you can imagine.” I gave her a quick hug and she left me alone. Pressing the number into my phone, I set it on speaker, and my insides swirled in anxiety.

But an error noise sounded. So I dialed again and it kept disconnecting. Shit. I leaped to my feet. Maybe Dean could help find who this number belonged to, so I wiped my eyes and rushed outside to find my men.
